The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the RCMP committed a criminal offence during an arrest in Perth Andover, New Brunswick.

On the night of October 3, 2025, three RCMP officers from the RCMP’s Perth Andover detachment responded to a 911 call related to a domestic disturbance and physical dispute involving multiple people. The house and some of its residents were known to police. Two officers entered the home and one remained outside to speak with the 911 caller. In the residence, one of the officers approached an adult male to detain him, as he was believed to have physically assaulted the 911 caller. The male resisted and a struggle ensued.  One of the officers deployed his Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW/Taser) twice, striking the male both times before he was successfully placed in handcuffs.

Between the CEW deployments an adult female in the house was yelling and approached the officers with her arm raised. The officer pointed his CEW in her direction and advised she would be tased if she did not step away.

Once the adult male was in custody, the adult female locked herself inside the home where a small child was sleeping. She eventually exited the house and was handcuffed by police. The female alleged police used excessive force, but there was no indication of this discovered in the investigation.

The RCMP referred this matter to SiRT on November 13, 2025. While no serious injuries were sustained, SiRT conducted a thorough investigation in the public interest.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
