SiRT Concludes Investigation into Police Involved Shooting in Moncton

Published: 2026-04-07

Province(s): New Brunswick
Police Agency: RCMP New Brunswick
Investigation: 2025-0111

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the New Brunswick RCMP “J” Division committed a criminal offence when he discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of an adult male, while responding to a call in Moncton, New Brunswick.

On the afternoon of September 27, 2025, several 911 calls were made related to an evolving situation that started with an adult male committing armed robbery at an RBC in Moncton. After committing the robbery, the male fled on foot towards a residential area. He attempted to steal an occupied vehicle at gunpoint, but was unsuccessful, and shot at another vehicle. He then continued on foot, where he broke into a home and pointed his firearm at the occupant, who was able to get away unharmed.

Shortly after, the RCMP located the male in the residence. An RCMP officer issued commands to comply with them and the male appeared to be cooperating but then retreated into the house and fired two shots in the direction of an officer. The male remained in the house for over an hour and called 911 several times. He then set a vehicle in the driveway and the house on fire before exiting out the back of the house, where multiple officers told him to stop. The male pointed his firearm at officers and threatened them. He ran to a neighbouring home that had been evacuated and attempted to break in. The male was looking for something in his pants and threatened to kill officers. He turned around, raised his arms, and pointed his firearm at officers. At this time one of the officers fired three rounds from a carbine rifle, striking the male. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

SiRT was contacted the same day and the investigation started. The Director’s detailed report is available online.
