SiRT Charges Sunny Corner RCMP Officer with Assault
The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has reasonable grounds to believe that a member of the Sunny Corner RCMP has committed a criminal offence.
On April 20, 2026, SiRT received a referral from the RCMP regarding allegations an officer had assaulted his intimate parter. Miramichi Police Force initially responded to the call on April 17, 2026. SiRT took over the investigation once notified of the incident.
Following the investigation, on June 8, 2026, Cst. James MacMillan was charged with one count of assault, pursuant to s. 266 of the Criminal Code, one count of assault by choking, pursuant to s. 267(c) of the Criminal Code, and one count of unsafe storage of a firearm, contrary to s. 86(1) of the Criminal Code.
Cst. MacMillan will appear in Miramichi Provincial Court, 673 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB on August 24, 2026, at 9:30 am.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
