SiRT Concludes Investigation into Breach of Trust

Published: 2025-12-15
Province(s): New Brunswick
Police Agency: RCMP
Investigation: 2025-0063

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe members of the RCMP in New Brunswick committed a criminal offence in connection to an impaired driving investigation.

On February 11, 2025, an RCMP officer’s son was in a motor vehicle accident which resulted in a driving suspension after a roadside impaired driving investigation by a Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS) Officer. Following the suspension, and while an appeal was ongoing, the RCMP officer communicated with JPS employees to try and resolve issues with his son’s file. Throughout this communication he stated he was an RCMP officer and referenced his rank and experience. The officer also provided JPS with an unauthorized RCMP case analysis of the incident prepared by another RCMP officer.

On June 19, 2025, JSP contacted the RCMP regarding their concerns with the communication and case analysis. The RCMP contacted SiRT and an investigation related to both officers was started immediately.

The Director’s detailed summary report outlining the investigation and her decision can be found online: SiRT Concludes Investigation into Breach of Trust | Serious Incident Response Team .

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
