UPDATE: SiRT Investigating Police Involved Shooting

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the discharge of a firearm by a member of the RCMP in Chelsea, Nova Scotia, that resulted in the death of an adult male.
On the morning of July 9, 2026 SiRT was contacted by the RCMP regarding a police involved shooting. SiRT immediately assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- On the morning of July 9, 2026, members of the RCMP were responding to reports related to a man in possession of a gun in the Chelsea area.
- The adult male was located, and one officer discharged their firearm, striking the male.
- First aid was administered but the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As this is an active investigation SiRT will not be providing any further comment at this time.
SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
