The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a serious injury sustained by an adult woman while in custody of the Edmundston Police Force (EPF) in Edmundston, New Brunswick.

Preliminary information suggests:

• On the night of February 19, 2026, members of the EPF responded to a disturbance at a local hotel.
• An adult woman was located at the bar and arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. The officers placed her in handcuffs and transported her to the police station.
• In the early morning hours of February 20, 2026, an ambulance was called to assess the woman in cells as she complained of pain in her arm but they were unable to assess her.
• The woman went to the hospital after she was released from custody, where she was diagnosed with a fracture to her arm.

SiRT received a referral from EPF on July 9, 2026, after they were made aware of the seriousness of the injury. SiRT commenced its investigation following the referral.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
