SiRT Investigating Death in New Brunswick

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the death of an adult male that occurred in cells in Miramichi, New Brunswick.

 

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • The evening of August 3, 2025, Miramichi Police Officers arrested an adult male for theft and mischief at a local restaurant.
  • The male was transported to the Miramichi Police Station and placed into cells.
  • The following morning, officers attended the male’s cell to release him. The male was unresponsive.
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended the cell and the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the death of the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
