The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of an adult male that occurred during an interaction with a member of the Saint John Police Force (SJPF).

Preliminary Information suggests the following:
• On the night of May 27, 2026, a SJPF officer attempted to stop an adult male who was operating a motorized bicycle in Saint John, New Brunswick.
• The male did not stop, and this led to a brief vehicle pursuit followed by a foot pursuit.
• The officer took the male to the ground, and he sustained a serious injury to his face during his arrest.

SiRT was contacted by SJPF on July 9, 2026, when they became aware of the seriousness of the injury. Due to the serious injury, SiRT has started an investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
