SiRT Concludes Investigation into Serious Injury in Sussex, New Brunswick
The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that a member of the Sussex RCMP committed a criminal offence in connection with a serious injury sustained by a young adult male.
On June 26, 2025, Sussex RCMP responded to a call at a local group home regarding a resident who was being violent and damaging property. The first officer on the scene located a young adult male outside of the home with a large piece of asphalt in his hands near a broken window. The male was arrested for mischief and placed into the back of a police vehicle where he began thrashing his body and yelling. The officer opened the door to handcuff the male so he would not hurt himself or damage the police vehicle. While the officer was trying to gain control the male spit in the officer’s face. The officer then lifted the male’s arm behind his back to place him in handcuffs. While doing so, the officer heard a pop and recognized the male was injured. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was contacted immediately, and the male was diagnosed with a fractured elbow.
SiRT was contacted by the RCMP the same day and an investigation was started.
