SiRT Concludes Investigation into Miramichi Death and Refers Matter to RCMP

Published: 2026-07-09

Province(s): New Brunswick
Police Agency: Miramichi
Investigation: 2025-0092

On August 4, 2025, the Miramichi Police Force (MPF) contacted SiRT regarding the death of an adult male who had been arrested by MPF officers and placed in cells overnight.

Upon completion of the investigation the Director of the Serious Incident Response Team has found no reasonable grounds to believe members of the MPF committed a criminal offence in connection to the death. The SiRT Director did however identify concerns with the actions of other persons that do not fall within SiRT’s jurisdiction. As a result, SiRT has forwarded the file to the RCMP for further investigation.

The Director’s report is available online: 25-0092-Summary-of-Investigation-Director-Report-6a4fd1a35c8de.pdf . As the investigation is ongoing and now sits with the RCMP details have been limited and SiRT will not comment further on the matter.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation
