SiRT Concludes Investigation into Collision Resulting in Serious Injury
The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the RCMP committed a criminal offence in relation to a serious injury sustained during a collision.
On May 17, 2026, SiRT was notified by the RCMP about a motor vehicle collision in Hartland, New Brunswick, involving one of their members and a volunteer firefighter. The officer was operating a police vehicle while responding to a 911 call regarding an unconscious person on a wooded trail. The volunteer firefighter was also responding to this call on a personal side by side (ATV). The two vehicles were near the intersection of Rockland Road and Clark Street when they collided, resulting in the ATV flipping on its side. The ATV driver was transported to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken wrist, head injury and lacerations.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
