SiRT Charges Cape Breton Regional Police Officer with Assault

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has reasonable grounds to believe that a member of the Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) has committed a criminal offence.

On November 29, 2025, CBRP contacted SiRT regarding an altercation involving one of their officers that occurred while off duty on the night of November 28, 2025.

Following the investigation, on March 5, 2026, Cst. Charles Maurice Bourgeois was charged with assault contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code.

Cst. Bourgeois will appear before the Nova Scotia Provincial Court at, 136 Charlotte Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia, on May 1, 2026 at 9:30 a.m.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
