SiRT 2024-25 Annual Report

The Serious Incident Response Team is pleased to present its Annual Report for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The report highlights SiRT’s busiest year to date, achievements, ongoing work related to diversity and inclusion as well as key statistics related to investigations.

“As SiRT Director, I am proud to report on how we are holding police accountable by way of thorough and impartial investigations. I look forward to progressing the work of our team and remain committed to building public confidence in the oversight of police in all communities of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick,” said Erin Nauss, SiRT Director.

  • Key Stats
  • SiRT received 142 incident notifications: 113 from the police and 29 from the public
  • 43 notifications became investigations: 24 in Nova Scotia and 19 New Brunswick
  • 11 officers were charged with one or more offences: 7 in Nova Scotia and 4 in New Brunswick.
  • SiRT laid charges for:
    • aggravated assault
    • sexual assault and choking
    • assault
    • criminal harassment
    • break and enter and mischief
    • firearms offence
    • child internet exploitation and child pornography offences
    • breach of trust and theft
    • voyeurism and child pornography

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
