Summary

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a police involved shooting that occurred during an arrest in downtown Halifax.

SiRT was contacted on the evening of January 17, 2026 by the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) regarding a shooting involving one of their officers.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the late afternoon of January 17, 2026 HRP responded to two separate calls related to robberies at two NSLC locations in downtown Halifax.
  • The same adult male was suspected of both robberies and was known to be in possession of a sensory irritant.
  • HRP officers located the male on Quinpool Road and as they attempted to arrest the male he threated officers with a large knife. He did not comply with commands to drop the knife and was tasered, but it was ineffective. A second officer then fired their service weapon, striking the male.
  • The male was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone who may have witnessed the interaction near the Superstore on Quinpool Road or has video footage are asked to contact SiRT directly by emailing sirt.tips@novascotia.ca or calling 1-902-943-2337.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
