Summary

On May 29, 2024, RCMP members responded to a medical assistance call from Ambulance NB
in Shediac, NB. Ambulance NB had attended an apartment where an adult male (the “Affected
Party”/the “AP”) was in medical distress. When they arrived, they noted the AP was having
difficulty breathing, was bleeding, and was being uncooperative. Due to the AP’s erratic
behaviour, and for safety reasons, the paramedics called the RCMP to attend the scene so they
could secure the AP and move him to a safer location. The paramedics exited the apartment and
waited for RCMP officers to arrive. Once the officers were on scene, they observed the AP in a
bathroom with broken glass, large amounts of blood, and drug paraphernalia. The AP was
uncooperative and assaultive. The officers attempted to gain control of the AP and during this
process a CEW (Conducted Energy Weapon/Taser) was deployed, striking the AP. The officers
gained control and moved the AP to a safe location so the paramedics could sedate him and
administer care. The AP had stopped breathing, but was revived, and transported to hospital by
ambulance. The AP died the following day in hospital.
