Public Interest Investigation into discharge of firearm at Onslo Fire Hall during Mass Casualty Event & SIU Review

Summary
Review: Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) concluded its review into the April 19, 2020, Onslow Fire Hall incident and has determined that no criminal charges are warranted. The SIU reviewed information considered by the Joint Federal/Provincial Commission into the April 2020 Nova Scotia Mass Casualty (Mass Casualty Commission), with respect to shots fired by two RCMP officers at the Onslow Fire Hall on April 19, 2020. The Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) had asked Ontario’s SIU to review whether any new information considered by the Mass Casualty Commission that had not been considered in the SiRT’s investigation of the shooting, would impact the previous SiRT decision that no charges were warranted.

SiRT was notified on April 19, 2020 of an incident involving shots being fired by the two Subject Officers (SO1and SO2), which had occurred earlier that day at the Onslow Fire Hall. The two SOs fired shots in the direction of the Affected Parties (AP1and AP 2). AP1, a uniformed RCMP officer was sitting in a marked police vehicle and AP2, a civilian wearing a high visibility orange and yellow vest was standing next to the police vehicle. The investigation of this shooting began that day and concluded on February 10, 2021.
