SiRT Investigating Police Involved Shooting

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a police involved shooting involving the RCMP which resulted in the death of an adult male in Maltempec, New Brunswick.

On the night of August 26, 2026, SiRT was contacted by the RCMP regarding a police involved shooting. SiRT assumed responsibility for the investigation immediately and investigators attended the scene.

Preliminary information suggests:

  • On the evening of August 26, 2026, members of the RCMP responded to a call at a residence in Maltempec regarding an adult male in crisis in possession of a firearm.
  • The male fired at officers and at least one officer discharged their firearm, striking the male.
  • The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
