SiRT Concludes Investigation into Possible Breach of Trust in New Brunswick

Published: 2025-07-14
Province(s): New Brunswick
Police Agency: Fredericton Police Force
Investigation: 2024-040

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the Fredericton Police Force (FPF) committed a criminal offence in relation to police materials found on a seized phone.

In 2023, FPF officers were conducting a drug investigation and executed a search warrant in Fredericton, NB, at the residence of an adult male who was known to police. As part of the search, four cell phones belonging to the male were seized. In May 2024, during a review of one of the phones, photographs of a FPF officer’s personal computer were found on it. The photos contained sensitive and privileged police information. It was confirmed through the metadata that those photos were taken on the seized phone at the residence where the search warrant was executed.

SiRT was contacted by a member of FPF on June 13, 2024, and started its investigation immediately.

The Director’s summary report is available below.

An initial news release was not issued at the outset of this investigation to protect the integrity of SiRT’s investigation. A news release is always issued at the conclusion of an investigation along with the Director’s decision and report.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
