Additional Charges Laid Against Former RCMP Officer
On June 3, 2024, the RCMP “J” Division contacted SiRT regarding information that suggested an active RCMP member was engaged in criminal offences. SiRT provided oversight of the specialized operation, working with the RCMP “J” Division Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) and Digital Forensic Services (DFS). Jeremy Bastarache was previously charged by the RCMP on June 10, 2024, under Part V of the Criminal Code. Investigation into additional offences has continued since that date by the RCMP “J” Division Integrated Child Exploitation Unit and Digital Forensic Services (DFS), with oversight from SiRT.
On January 30, 2026, Jeremy Bastarache was charged with seven additional indictable offences under Part V of the Criminal Code (Sexual Offences, Public Morals and Disorderly Conduct) and Part VIII of the Criminal Code (Offences Against the Person and Reputation). As the matter is before the courts SiRT will not provide further comment on the investigation.
SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
